Marvia Malik, a transgender who has pocketed a bachelor's degree in journalism, got a job as a newscaster on a Pakistani private television.
She, who is also a model photo, is now listed as the first transgender newscaster on the country's television channel. Her first appeared as a broadcaster on private television Kohenoor on Friday (23/03), after attending training for three months.
To the BBC, she said that she forced herself not to shout with joy when she got the news of her application.
So far, transgender communities in Pakistan are discriminated and they have difficulty finding employment. Some of them are trapped in prostitution, beggars or dancers to earn living.
With her current position, Marvia Malik hopes to help improve the life of the transgender community in her country.
Kohenoor television owner Junaid Ansari told VOA that Marvia Malik got a job as an announcer on the basis of her ability and not on the basis of gender considerations.
Earlier this month, the Pakistan High Council passed a bill to protect transgender rights, and allowed them to define their own gender identity.
Cases of discrimination experienced by the transgender community are common, including access to health care. In June 2016, a 23-year-old transgender activist died after being late for treatment.
According to her friends, Alisha, who was shot eight times, was in critical condition when taken to hospital but hospital employees could not determine whether she has to be placed in a women's or men's ward.
